Meet Our Scholarship Recipients
Miss Charlotte Cook – Recipient Spotlight
Bachelor of Paramedicine, University of Tasmania
Charlotte is from Kingston, and went to Hobart College before her admission into the Bachelor of Paramedicine at the University of Tasmania. Charlotte was selected as the preferred scholarship recipients based on her exceptional ATAR, high financial need, high community involvement, and an all-around strong application.
Charlotte has previously been involved in both debating and ethics Olympiads, and in the school Vinnies group. She shared that these experiences improved her critical decision making, communication, public speaking, social awareness and understanding of factors effecting the lives and wellbeing of people in the community.
Currently, I am a member of the Premiers Youth Advisory Council which has enabled me to listen to and voice the concerns of my peers but also identify and make recommendations for effective strategies to overcome these.
Earlier this year I decided to take up rowing, a sport I had no previous experience in but through my time there I have found myself with a greater wiliness to try new things and preserve both physically and mentally. The sport and associated community has helped me grow in both confidence, self-reliance and enthusiasm for new and challenging opportunities.
Dr Wu is grateful of a number of University undergraduate medical scholarships and bursaries received, as well as the Australian Postgraduate Award with stipend for his Masters research degree on Glaucoma.
Bailey Hite – Recipient Spotlight (North West)
Bachelor of Arts (Criminology), University of Tasmania
Bailey is from Wynard, and went to Marist Regional College in Burnie before qualifying for University. Bailey will be commencing a Bachelor of Arts in Criminology this year, studying at the Launceston UTAS campus.
Bailey was selected as the preferred scholarship recipient, as she grew up on the North West, has a great ATAR, demonstrates high financial need, and has confirmed her ongoing participation in volunteering and community engagement. She also shared in her application how volunteering has helped her grow.
As a child I struggled with severe anxiety which made it hard to participate in sports or group activities. Over the years I worked hard to overcome this by pushing myself out of my comfort zone and seeking opportunities to grow. One of the most meaningful experiences was my involvement with the local youth council group in Wynyard where we organised events and activities for young people. Through this I was offered the chance to attend YNOT and share my thoughts on current issues affecting youth. Being part of this group helped build my confidence and take on leadership roles.
I also volunteered in local cafes especially at the lobster ponds where I often ran front of house. This taught me leadership problem solving and teamwork. Through these experiences I met people who supported and encouraged me and I learned how important it is to stay open adaptable and willing to grow.
